Wendy Davis’ 13 hour filibuster was a wake-up call that’s resonating far beyond the borders of Texas. She is a champion for every woman in America.

DOMA struct down 5 to 4. Well it’s good to see that SCOTUS is still capable of getting it right every once-and-a-while.
"DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment."

Well done Mr. Ebert.
Tomas Young was paralyzed from the chest down during his deployment to Iraq. Since then, his health has only deteriorated. He has decided to refuse care and end his life, and his wife, Claudia Cuellar, says she respects his wishes.
I think it is not only ethical but a moral imperative that everyone have the right to die with dignity and that is why I support organizations like the Death With Dignity Center therefore I obviously do not object to the decision made by this young man.
Fortunately for Mr. Young, the Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990 allows competent adults to refuse care so “A health care provider can follow the instructions of a patient and not provide or withdraw medically administered nutrition and hydration.”
Unfortunately, there are many who disagree with a persons right to die with dignity and continue to make it illegal in most states for people who are terminally ill to seek assistance from medical professionals in ending their life peacefully. As a result, Mr. Young will have to endure more unnecessary suffering and die a slow and painful death.
Hopefully this will change sooner than later.
I’m not afraid to admit that I’m an Atheist and I approve this message!
In response to Rick Perry’s recent ad below of course:-)
Seriously, the only way one can justify opposing gay marriage or banning civil unions is if one adheres to an ancient barbaric belief system which teaches hate instead of love, dogma in place of learning, ignorance instead of truth, guilt of sin rather than joy and fear in place of tolerance. This is not a gay rights issue, it’s a human rights issue.
It Gets Better, I promise! (by xgothemo99xx)
“14-Year-Old Who Made ‘It Gets Better’ Video Commits Suicide Amidst Bullying
Back in May, Buffalo teen Jamey Rodermeyer contributed a video to the “It Gets Better” campaign. Though only 14, Rodermeyer felt he had a message of hope to send whoever was watching. Now, four months later, he’s dead of a suicide.
Jamey’s parents, who found him dead at their home early Monday morning, say that he had been bullied because of his perceived sexuality for years, but that they thought that he was doing better, having started high school three weeks ago. Following his death, they now suspect he’d just gotten better at hiding the effects of being harassed. Friends at his school say he was still being teased and worse on a regular basis.
So, that’s fucking terrible. Today, when we celebrate the repeal of one bit of federally legislated anti-gay bullying, let’s remember that it also still of course exists in myriad small ways, for many people, all over the world.”
I’m very saddened to hear this and very pissed off at our society which continues to overlook the institutionalized bullying tradition that exists in our education system and in other area’s of our so-called civilized nation.
"I think for many people in this country they are unaware that in states where same-sex marriage is the law of the land like New York, like Massachusetts [same sex couples are] still denied fundamental federal benefits in those states."
So basically, even if every State in the Union legalized same sex marriage tomorrow, gay couples would still be discriminated against unless DOMA is overturned. I’m glad to see President Obama is now being proactive on this issue and openly advocating for the demise of this government sanctioned bigotry.
THE GOOD SAMARITAN AND THE ALABAMA GOVERNOR
What would Jesus Do? If he were caught helping an illegal in Alabama, he’d get Arrested.
The parable told by the character Jesus in the Gospel of Luke 10-:25-37, which tells the story of the Good Samaritan, is probably one of the most admirable stories in the Christian Bible and is very agreeable to atheists, agnostics and humanists. In fact, it is a key tenet of secular humanism which is why I am so fond of it.
It is a story that champions love instead of hatred, compassion over selfishness and tolerance over intolerance.
Of course the ethics of this parable do not originate with the tales of Jesus or exemplify the overall moral principles taught by the Gospels but it does appeal to the more caring sensibilities of liberal believers.
As for your average conservative, right wing Christian like Governor Robert Bentley, the Gospel teachings of Matthew 5:17-19, 10:21, 10:34, 11:20, 15:4-7, 19:29, Mark 7:9 and Luke 12:47 may be more appealing.
