Wow, what an amazing film! Compassionate, witty, sad, joyful, sexy, sensual… This is an unapologetic look at the human experience.
Being Flynn (2012)
An excellent film based on the true story “Another Bullshit Night in Suck City” by Nick Flynn! Very well written and one of De Niro’s best roles and performances in years. Paul Dano, Julianne Moore and Olivia Thirlby were all at the top of their game as well.
There are many great quotes in the movie but below are some of my favorite from the book.
The last quote is especially poignant for me because I too have experienced similar moments involving the relationship with my own alcoholic father. In light of my own overindulgence with the attractively packaged poison known as alcohol over the years, I too have feared that I would become my father.
Burning Man (2011): Great film! Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster ride that demands your attention from the opening masturbation scene to the final credits. Warning, don’t attempt to watch this movie if you have a short attention span.

I enjoyed watching this film the other night, loved Bill Nighy’s performance as always. Kelly Macdonald also gave an enchanting portrayal of what appears to be a somewhat shy and damaged woman who turns out to be very strong and opinionated.
For those who may be skeptical about this movie and put value in Rotten Tomatoes, note that it receive an 82% rating on their website.

Leaves Of Grass
I picked this film up for a $1.99 in the DVD bargain bin at Blockbuster yesterday and watched it last night.
It was great and Norton gave his best performance since Fight Club in my opinion. Roger Ebert wrote that this film is a “sweet, wacky masterpiece” and an “intelligent, philosophical and poetic film.”
I agree.
Also, Tim Blake Nelson was great as usual.
Ludicrous Speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite clips from one of the greatest spoofs every made:-)
I finally got to see the new sci-fi comedy ‘Paul’ over the weekend. Unfortunately, I missed it during its brief sojourn in the theaters.
The film stars the comedy duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of Shaun of the Dead fame as well as Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul. It also includes Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver and Saturday Night Live’s Kristin Wiig.
Although the movie lampoons the alien encounter conspiracy culture in America, its premise regrettably seems to give these same conspiracy theories undue credence. Of course, the film more than makes up for its Area 51 nonsense with its mocking criticism of religious fundamentalism and creationist ideology.
That’s about all I’m going to say about the film here because I don’t want to spoil it for those who plan on watching but I will share one of my favorite clips in which Paul and his two English cohorts debate Evolution vs Intelligent Design with a young earth creationist.
Hat tip to Atheist Movies for the clip.
Graeme: That’s a nice t-shirt.
Ruth: Oh thanks, I got it at my church. It’s Jesus shooting Charles Darwin.
Graeme: Why would Jesus want to shoot Charles Darwin.
Ruth: Because of his blasphemous theories. Are you men of God?
Clive: We’re men of science. You know, we believe in the establishment of biological order through the maelstrom of physical and chemical chaos.
Ruth: The world is 4000 years old and can only be the product of intelligent design.
Paul (Speaking from the bathroom): That’s horseshit!
Ruth: Alright then, please explain how something as complex as the human eye simply just comes into being?
Paul (Speaking from the bathroom): It didn’t just come into being, it’s a combination of millions of years of development across countless species.
Ruth: What are you talking about?!
Paul: EVOLUTION BABY!
I’m really looking forward to watching all the special features on the double DVD release.
